What is thyroid cancer surgery?

Thyroid cancer surgery is performed to remove part or all of the thyroid gland affected by cancer. Depending on the type and stage of the disease, lymph nodes in the neck may also be removed to prevent the spread of cancer and improve long-term outcomes.

Will I need to take thyroid medication after surgery?

If the entire thyroid gland is removed (total thyroidectomy), lifelong thyroid hormone replacement medication is usually required. If only one lobe of the thyroid is removed, some patients may continue to produce enough thyroid hormone naturally and may not require medication.
